1. If you're keen on keeping a homepage slideshow…
I’ve written a lot on how homepage slideshows are usually boring and bad for UX.
But if you're keen on keeping a slideshow for its visual impressiveness, make it shorter and use a panoramic aspect ratio because that has a couple of advantages. It doesn't occupy the entire fold. So it lets people start seeing critical information underneath.
In this particular example, this is a "best of" slideshow.

It has a very wide 8:3 aspect ratio and it just doesn't take up too much vertical space. Uh, it shows the tagline underneath and it's stylish. So I think it's a good solution.
2. Success depends a lot on treating photography as a business
And the serious positioning decisions that go along with it.
More specifically, beginner photographers need to understand, quite early, the difference between "niching" (focusing on a particular target audience) and "specializing" (becoming an expert at something) and how they can be combined.
Niching is usually the easiest career path for beginner photographers because it provides a clear path to follow (just choosing a specific type of client to work with) and offers feedback and possibilities for course-correcting along the way.
And generally, there is an understanding that photography is a business. So besides shooting & editing photos, you must learn many other skills: sales, outreach, web design, SEO, marketing, finances, contracts, copyright, etc.
Otherwise, you're leaving it all up to the wind.
