1. Your nav menu should indicate the current page

This one’s easy to understand: when glancing at the navigation, a user should know what page he/she is already on:

This is less important, but you get bonus points if that highlighted menu item (indicating the current page) is not longer an active link (so you don’t link to the current page).

2. Optimize your website for first-time visitors

Sometimes it's really hard to improve your photography website because your too close to your own work. You don't have the perspective.

First time visitor, so people landing on your homepage for the first time, they don't think like you, they've never seen your website. They behave differently. And here's what I think makes them different.

Number one is: their trust starts at zero, right? They never saw your work. They're skeptical. They don't know what you're capable of. They're not familiar with your website, how it's structured and all of that. And they have high expectations.

Try to empathize with them, try to think like them, to view your website with fresh eyes. So ask yourself things like: When someone comes to this home page, what are they looking for? Do they want to hire me as a photographer, to view my prices, to view my services? Do they want to purchase stock images from me or whatever? And can they get to that information quickly or are they overwhelmed?
